    Second Period (1866-1899):

Important Buildings of the Second Period:

Residence of Ulysses Heureaux (Residencia de Ulises Heureaux). Located at 204 Las Mercedes Street. Modified Colonial. Lower doorways and windows of equal dimensions, descending to the floor. Vertical straight lines with rosettes in their centers. Simply framed upper doorways and windows. Continuous ironwork balconies on wood beams.

Residence at Number 165 Isabel La Católica Street (Residencia de la calle Isabel La Católica, No.165). Built between 1880 and 1884. Neocolonial Republican. Four unequally spaced openings on each of the two levels. Simple, Colonial style cornice. Continuous, straight-lined balcony decorated with small, curved detail and a handrail of wood.

Old Market Building (El edificio del Mercado Viejo). Inaugurated January 1, 1879. Manufactured in England of steel beams and a galvanized zinc ceiling. Nevertheless, it was a continuous problem for the city in terms of public health and was considered by many to be an eyesore.

Trade Club (Club del Comercio) and the building Fe en el Porvenir (Faith in the Future). Victorian style buildings located in Puerto Plata.

Jiménez House in Montecristi. Victorian style. Imported from France.

Samaná Park Bower (La glorieta del parque de Samaná). Victorian style.

Residence of Mr. Thormann, German Consul to the Dominican Republic (La residencia de Mr. Thormann). Gingerbread style house of wood manufactured in Germany and assembled in Guibia (Santo Domingo).

San Nicolas de Bari Hospital (Hospital San Nicolás de Bari). Construction finished in 1522. The Dictator Ulysses Heureaux turned it into his private pasture. Corner of Hostos and Luperón Streets.

The monastery Monasterio de San Francisco. Located on a small hill which made it an important point of visual reference for the city. Served in the 1880's as the headquarters for the mental institution directed by Father Billini. Located on Hostos Street at Emiliano Tejera Street.
