Fifth Period: From the downfall of Rafael L. Trujillo (1961) to 1996
Neighborhoods:
Between 1961 and 1965 private housing projects, such as Los Prados, Urbanization Las Villas, and El Ensanche Paraiso emerged to the West of the city of Santo Domingo.
In that same period other impromptu neighborhoods such as Ensanche Isabelita, the extension of Alma Rosa, and others, emerged to the East of the city of Santo Domingo, as well as other marginalized neighborhoods such as El Faro, Katanga, Vietnam and Maquiteria.
Between 1982 and 1986 the public sector built housing projects in different areas of Santo Domingo (such as Invivienda Santo Domingo, in the East side, which was never completed). Other housing projects were also built in the North side (Sabana Perdida) and on the West of the city.
During Salvador Jorge Blanco’s administration, the private sector built several housing projects to the West of the capital and in Los Tres Brazos (Eastern Zone).
Between 1986 and 1991, some once rural communities became urban, such as Villa Mella, Manoguayabo, Haina and others.
At the end of the 80`s, as part of the project to build Mexico Avenue and Fifth Centenary Avenue, the government began to build multifamily housing projects in Villa Juana and on Mexico Avenue. For this project, it was necessary to evacuate and demolish the single-family units that composed Villa Juana and Villa Francisca, which changed the landscape of these neighborhoods.
In Balaguer’s last governmental period, a number of large housing projects were built on the extension of Jose Contreras Avenue and in Los Rios and Ensanche La Fe neighborhoods.
At the beginning of the 90`s the government inaugurated the housing project Ciudad del Almirante to relocate families who were evacuated from La Cienaga, Los Guandules and other neighborhoods that were demolished to make way to new road projects.
