Barahona

In the south of the country, along the Caribbean coast with its intense blue water, Carnival of Barahona boasts some of the wildest characters including Cachúas de Cabral with their small spikes sticking out of their devils masks, The Painted Cat Men, The Indians of La Ciénaga and Jimmy’s Devils.

The party, which concludes with the burning of Judas-Calié in the local cemetery, takes place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday after Holy Week. The community of Cabral, like Peñón, Fundación, Cristóbal and Salinas, joins in with costumes made of crepe paper, ribbons, cow’s liver and whips. The ritual in the cemetery is considered one of most impressive and significant ceremonies in all of Dominican folklore and takes place after Easter.
