Cotui
The Platanuses, characters who are covered in plantain leaves, wear painted gourd masks and carry whips, lend an oddly organic touch to the Carnival in this community of Cibao. Leftovers from the slaughterhouse painted various colors are the basis of the masks here. They also use paper, plastic, crepe paper as well in the style of Papeluses.
Creative inspiration runs high in the town of Cotuí. Some of the masks and corresponding characters include: The Mid Day Man, dressed as a woman with the colors of the flag painted on their faces; Death in All Its Perplexity; The Snake with Seven Sins; Death on Stilts and General Cocotico who wears a palm leaf for his armor, to name a few.
There is also the all important traditional Chicken Thief and the Stained (los Tiznaos - with motor oil) Men.
