The Carnival of Bonao: Unique with an interesting history
At the beginning of the 1930s, Bonao began to celebrate its street carnival in which young people and adults made their own costumes and masks and walked all around the neighborhood streets beginning at 10:00 in the morning.
At this time, they had musical group competitions in the Yuna Casino, Inc. in the presence of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo and José Arismendy Trujillo Molina (Petán). Women from high society and elderly gentlemen participated. The costumes consisted of trousers, a blouse and a curtain that you’d find in a normal house. To this they added whistles, little mirrors and many multi-colored ribbons.

Bonao
Between harvest and harvest in the Cibao region in the center of the country, people dedicate their energy in February to the creation of an authentic carnival.
The residents, known as Macaros, take to the streets with their costumes, mirrors, bells, and flamboyant colors.
Artists of the province have put their stamp on the celebration by giving the province an extraordinary originality that is linked to the pallet and the canvas. The brushstrokes of the painters and the ethnic symbols of the region are given a privileged spot of the carnival’s roster.
